Somatic Counseling and Trauma

Premise: Trauma exists and we have all experienced trauma whether it is present day or generational.  Trauma is stored in our bodies in multiple ways that we  observe in our behaviors.  Because we are in a culture where suppression and avoidance is key our emotions are constantly trying to get us to notice and take care of the effects of trauma on our body.  The more we suppress and avoid the louder our emotions become and as a result we do everything we can to either numb our emotions or fix our emotions even through counseling.  Counseling uses tools and techniques with the focus of fixing our emotions and diminishing the ones we deem as negative to help clients sit in good feelings.  The main tool of counseling is talk therapy which although effective with surface trauma effects it does not allow us to sit in our bodies and identify the trauma hiding deep inside of our bodies.  In addition, if the focus is to fix, diminish and get rid of “negative” emotions then we never honor these emotions and allow them to tell us why they are here.  We learn to cope with them versus inviting them in to lead us back to our bodies to address the trauma.

Purpose: To help people learn to journey inside of their bodies to address trauma, cultivate love and joy, embrace all of our emotions so that they may serve as a guide and be free to be our own healer in our journey towards freedom.
